How to get to Martha's Vineyard
There is year-round scheduled air service to the Martha's Vineyard Airport from Boston, New York City, and Providence, R.I. The airport is located in the center of the island, and taxis and cars (with reservations) can be hired at the terminal.
Cape Air: (800)325-0714, Flies from Boston, New Bedford, and Providence, and has joint fares for travel with America West, Continental, Delta, and U.S. Airways.
U.S. Airways: (800)428-4322 , Flies directly onto the Vineyard from New York City.
Flying into Boston or Providence:
  • Bus service to Woods Hole (for ferry travel) is available from Boston Logan Airport. Also available is bus service to New Bedford from Providence Airport. For further schedule and fare information, you can call Bonanza Bus Line at (800)556-3815 or check their website at
  • Alternatively, you can rent a car in Boston and drive to Woods Hole, but you will need a car reservation on the ferry in advance (see information below).

By Ferry:
Ferries to Martha's Vineyard sail from Woods Hole (walk-on passengers & cars) and from New Bedford (walk-on passengers only). You can find information about rates and schedules at or by calling (508)477-8600.
CAR TRAVEL: If you are planning to bring a car onto the island, it is very important that you make a ferry reservation ASAP through the Steamship Authority. You will need the following information to make a vehicle reservation: 1) the date and time of the ferries on which you would like reservations on and off the island; and 2) the license plate number of the car you will be driving. If you will be renting a car, just indicate "rental" in the space for the license plate number. The car fare is $55.00 each way, and the passenger fare is $5.50 each way. Both fares can be paid for when you make the vehicle reservation.
PASSENGER TRAVEL ONLY: If you are planning to walk onto the ferry you can purchase your ticket for $5.50 at hte Woods Hole terminal. You should plan to arrive at the terminal 45 minutes before the scheduled departure times.
If you are planning to leave your car on the mainland, you can park in numerous lots maintained by the Steamship Authority in Falmouth. Shuttle buses are available to take you to the ferry from the parking lots.
On Martha's Vineyard:
For getting around the island we'd suggest either bringing a car across on the ferry or, for an easier route, renting a car on the island. Taxis are also available from the ferry or the airport.

As with ferry reservations, the earlier you make room reservations the more choices and better rates you will have. September is a very popular month on the island, and rooms are booking up now.
